Our desire to help people and learn how the body functions drove our interest in pursuing a medical career. When we were in high school, our older brother, Greg, told his friend, Tom Kromer, about our wish to become doctors. He urged us to meet with his father, Dr. Robert Kromer. Dr. Kromer spent an evening sharing with us the osteopathic philosophy. He explained that a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) is a complete physician who treats the whole patient. He discussed the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment, or OMT, as another tool in our toolbox to help the patient. Structure dictates function; if the body is aligned, it will function better to help cure disease. That meeting with Dr. Kromer convinced us to pursue a career in osteopathic medicine and family practice. We attended the University of Toledo for our undergraduate degrees. We chose the Ohio University of Osteopathic Medicine in Athens, Ohio, for medical school. We wanted to be small-town family medicine physicians like Dr. Kromer and thought osteopathic medicine would provide us with the complete package to do that. After graduating from medical school, we completed a one-year internship at Firelands and a family Brett Kuns, DO Family Medicine Family medicine provides continuing, comprehensive healthcare for individuals and families, integrating the biological, clinical, and behavioral sciences.
