Security officers have been the target of negative public perception for years. They are often portrayed as incompetent, clumsy “wannabe cops” who have no idea what they are doing. This flawed view is inaccurate and underserving, especially in the case of healthcare security services. The security officers at Firelands Regional Medical Center are specially trained, dedicated men and women with a wide range of skills to ensure the safety of patients, visitors, and employees. In addition to what would be considered routine security officer tasks – checking locked doors, conducting monthly safety checks on equipment such as fire extinguishers, providing escorts to visitors and employees when needed, monitoring camera systems, writing security reports, conducting foot and vehicle patrols – Firelands security officers perform other duties, many of which are unique to healthcare. “We conduct fire drills, active shooter drills, missing infant drills, and disaster drills,” explains Ralph Mominee, Safety and Security captain at Firelands. “We are responsible for all radios, Life Flight operations, and morgue operations. We are also in charge of establishing an incident command center at Firelands in the case of a regional emergency. We also help our employees handle various Specially Trained, 18
