The hospital has accommodated me in every way possible so that I can go to school, work, and still see my family. I couldn’t have done it without the hospital’s support,” says Alicia. The Foundation for Firelands manages several scholarships for the Firelands Regional Medical Center School of Nursing. The Baxter family established the Edward J. and Doris Daly Baxter Scholarship Fund in 1990 to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Edward Baxter after 50 years of practicing medicine. Carolyn Walker Parrish established the Adelaide E. Walker Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of her mother in 1989. Adelaide was a nurse for 30 years and a 1930 Providence School of Nursing graduate. Carolyn also established the Rita Walker Baumeister Memorial Scholarship Fund in 1995 in memory of her sister, Rita, also a nurse. “Anyone may donate to these three scholarships that ensure nursing students have the means to complete their training,” shared Alice Springer, development director at The Foundation for Firelands. “We are blessed to have the devotion of these families and other donors who recognize the importance of accomplished nurses for our future health!” 14
