EHOVE Senior Recognition Book

History EHOVE first opened in 1968. It was all started in 1965, when the EHOVE Board of Education and a 21 member steering committee were formed to study the feasibility of creating a vocational training center in the Erie, Huron and Ottawa Counties. Locating a central position for the school was critical to even out the commute among all associate schools. After much debate, the name for the school was decided as EHOVE, the acronym for Erie Huron Ottawa Vocational Education. There were few schools of this type to imitate, so it was decided that a campus-style layout with several buildings would invoke a feeling that EHOVE was a prelude or pre-college institution. With gasoline at 33 cents a gallon, the concern for energy efficiency was not para- mount so buildings were designed with spacious hallways and many windows. The land, known as the Miller Farm, was purchased for $200 - $250 an acre. Approximately 285 students from associate schools enrolled in programs for its opening year, 1968. Fast forward to 2023, and EHOVE now serves approximately 900 high school students per year with 16+ partner schools. Today’s 25 career tech programs have evolved with the times and workforce demands, and include two sophomore-only career explora- tion programs. A full range of academics and activities are also offered to all students. EHOVE also has a robust adult education program that is the fourth largest in Ohio with 19 occupational programs that complement EHOVE high school students’ training and offer an affordable next step in training in the medical, skilled trades and human services fields. In the last 10 years, 46,000 square feet of building space has been added to campus, primarily with local contractors, to accommodate growth of our population and career tech education demand. These renovations have provided EHOVE students with the best facilities, equipment and technology to ensure they are prepared for in-demand careers with a skilled, hands-on education.
